Frequently Asked Questions

What is Domiciliary Dental Care?
Domiciliary dental care (or 'home dental care') is professional dental treatment delivered to patients in their place of residence. This service is designed for individuals who are medically unable to travel to a dental practice, such as those in care homes, sheltered housing, or private homes with mobility issues or complex medical conditions.
Who is eligible for your Domiciliary Dental Service?
Our service is primarily for individuals whose medical or physical condition makes it difficult or impossible to attend a traditional dental practice. This commonly includes elderly patients, those with physical disabilities, those with dementia, or individuals receiving palliative care.
What types of treatments can you provide in a patient's home?
We provide a comprehensive range of services, including:

Routine check-ups, examinations, and oral cancer screenings.

Professional cleaning and hygiene treatments.

Denture checks, adjustments, relines, and repairs.

Simple fillings and minor restorations.

Emergency treatments for pain, infection, or trauma.

Oral health education and advice for patients and caregivers.
Do you bring your own equipment?
Yes. We use portable, state-of-the-art dental equipment, including portable chairs, lights, suction units, and X-ray machines, which allow us to perform treatments efficiently and safely within the home environment.
Can you take X-rays at the patient's home?
In many cases, yes. We utilise portable digital X-ray technology when necessary to help diagnose issues accurately without requiring the patient to leave their home.
Is the service free?
Yes. All exams and home visits are funded by the NHS. Treatment may carry standard NHS charges unless the
patient is exempt.
Can you treat patients who lack capacity?
Yes. We are fully trained in AWI procedures and will manage consent and documentation with you.
What if the patient has mobility issues?
No problem — we come to them, whether at home or in a care facility.
Can you treat patients with dementia?
Yes, absolutely. We specialise in providing gentle, compassionate dental care for patients with complex needs, including those with dementia. Our domiciliary team is experienced in working with individuals who may have memory issues or cognitive challenges.

We prioritise creating a calm, low-stress environment and approach all interactions with dignity and patience. We also understand the importance of clear communication with caregivers and are trained to handle consent and documentation through the AWI (Adults with Incapacity) process where needed. We ensure that care plans are put at the heart of the treatment, sharing the same ethos as our care partners.
How do you get consent?
Our process for obtaining consent is carefully managed to ensure it is legal, ethical, and patient-centered, especially within a domiciliary setting.

For Patients with Capacity: For patients who have the capacity to make their own decisions, we follow the standard protocol:

The dentist explains the proposed treatment, any alternative options, and the associated risks and benefits clearly and simply. We ensure the patient fully understands the details before they give verbal or written consent to proceed.

For Patients Lacking Capacity (AWI Compliance): For individuals who may lack the capacity to give consent (such as those with advanced dementia), we strictly adhere to the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000 (AWI): Our team is fully trained in AWI procedures. We manage and process all necessary consent and documentation by working directly with the patient's welfare guardian, power of attorney, or the responsible care home manager.

This expertise ensures that care is provided with full clinical and legal compliance while upholding the patient's dignity. We handle all administrative and paperwork requirements related to AWI consent and NHS claims, ensuring a zero-admin burden for care teams and families.
Are dentures included?
Yes, we provide full support for dentures as part of our domiciliary service.

Our team offers: Denture Fitting and Adjustments. Checks and adjustments to ensure comfort, fit, and proper function. Denture treatment may carry standard NHS charges unless the patient is exempt. All exams and home visits themselves are funded by the NHS.
What does the exam include?
Our domiciliary dental exam is comprehensive and is fully funded by the NHS in Scotland. Since we bring the equipment to the patient, the exam includes vital assessments that are essential for maintaining oral health and comfort:

Free NHS Dental Exams and check-ups. Oral Cancer Screening. Gum Disease Assessments.

A tailored clinical assessment that takes into account the patient's individual medical history and complex needs. Advice and recommendations for ongoing care, which may include Fluoride Varnish Applications.

This thorough examination allows us to identify potential issues early, leading to a personalised treatment plan focused on the patient's dignity and well-being.
